New Classics is a Backbone x theatrePUNK co-program celebrating trans and gender diverse voices in theatre and performance. Taking over the city for four weeks, it combines a writer-in-residence development program with scratch nights, workshops and playreadings, built to fill the gap in queer programming in Magandjin. Highlights include playreadings of Tiger Skin by Fen Carter, a tender work about old fears and unfinished friendships, and A Case Study in Bottoming by Cullyn Beckton, a slutty, campy queer comedy set in Brisbane. The program also features an open-mic poetry night and a Trans Scratch Night in collaboration with Melt Festival, growing community networks for trans and gender-diverse talent across Queensland.

A sharp, riotous skewering of modern-day queer hookup culture, this brand new work by actor and playwright Cullyn Beckton will make you laugh your socks off in the way only a good/stupid/drunk night out at The Beat would.
A Case Study in Bottoming is slutty, tender, and set in Brisbane, about the unspoken war between loving yourself and letting someone else try. Twink has never had sex, Dakota can't stop, and the lesbians watch over it all like a judgmental Greek chorus with the divine foresight to see straight through the male bullshit. This campy queer comedy asks what hookup culture actually costs the people it's supposed to free. Get ready for some fierce dancing, drag, and a final showdown at The Beat that will leave you screaming.
About the Writer: Cullyn Beckton (they/them) is a 24-year-old Maori artist living in the sunny Meanjin region! Cullyn's primary discipline is acting; however, in 2026 they have broken through into an adjacent practice in the form of playwrighting. Cullyn initially started their playwright journey in 2023 with their freshman project, The Flower Does Not Exist with Crea Arena. In 2026, they have returned with their twin sophomore endeavours, Dog On A Tuckerbox with Underground Theatre Company and, of course, the campy and queer A Case Study in Bottoming with theatrePUNK co. They sincerely hope that you enjoy this wonderfully chaotic explosion of queer joy.
