New Classics is a Backbone x theatrePUNK co-program celebrating trans and gender diverse voices in theatre and performance. Taking over the city for four weeks, it combines a writer-in-residence development program with scratch nights, workshops and playreadings, built to fill the gap in queer programming in Magandjin. Highlights include playreadings of Tiger Skin by Fen Carter, a tender work about old fears and unfinished friendships, and A Case Study in Bottoming by Cullyn Beckton, a slutty, campy queer comedy set in Brisbane. The program also features an open-mic poetry night and a Trans Scratch Night in collaboration with Melt Festival, growing community networks for trans and gender-diverse talent across Queensland.

Alex left Lee two years ago. Besides, they were never together. Not really. He thought he had all but forgotten until it arrived. p. A searing autopsy of a relationship that refuses to stay dead, TIGER SKIN is a haunting new work from playwright Fen Carter that will stay with you long after first contact. When a relic of the past suddenly lands on his doorstep, Alex is plunged back into his old fears, forcing him to confront why he and his friends fell apart in the first place. Part ghost story, part elegy for the people we can't quite let go of, TIGER SKIN opens New Classics with something sharp and unshakeable from a powerful voice in contemporary writing.
About the Writer: Fen Carter is a queer playwright and theatre-maker from Meanjin. They graduated their BFA from QUT in 2019, directly into the Pandemic (!) and since then have written for Playlab’s Incubator and ATYP’s National Studio, and had work produced through the Backbone Festival, Observatory Theatre and PiP Theatre. They are also an Enjoyer of Tea and Video Essays.
Featuring: Theo Hughes, Liam Olsen, Chelsea Doran and Malika Savory
Content warnings for the play readings are as follows: homophobia, transphobia, mentions of AIDs, references to coercion and domestic abuse.
All performances are relaxed/low-sensory, and we can accommodate any access needs in workshops.
