New Classics is a Backbone x theatrePUNK co-program celebrating trans and gender diverse voices in theatre and performance. Taking over the city for four weeks, it combines a writer-in-residence development program with scratch nights, workshops and playreadings, built to fill the gap in queer programming in Magandjin. Highlights include playreadings of Tiger Skin by Fen Carter, a tender work about old fears and unfinished friendships, and A Case Study in Bottoming by Cullyn Beckton, a slutty, campy queer comedy set in Brisbane. The program also features an open-mic poetry night and a Trans Scratch Night in collaboration with Melt Festival, growing community networks for trans and gender-diverse talent across Queensland.

A lovingly extended invitation addressed to our past selves. Poems from a Past Life is an open-mic poetry night inviting trans, gender diverse and queer people to dig out the words, poems, plays or journal entries they wrote in their baby queer eras and read them out loud for an audience. This is a night for celebrating queerness in every phase of existence, especially the awkward, searching versions of ourselves who got us here.
No performance experience necessary, just the willingness to bring your past self into the room and let them be seen. You can also opt to have one of our New Classics artists read your words anonymously.
About the Host: el waddingham (they/them) is a queer performance artist based on Kombumerri country. el’s writing practice encompasses poetry, play and essay writing, and their words have been published by Currency Press, Playlab, Critical Dialogues, Glass Magazine and Minimum Wines. el’s artistic practices flows between performance, movement and writing and they enjoy manifesting realities filled with colour, humour and honesty.
