The Privacy Act 1988 provides rules of conduct for the collection, retention, access to, correction, use and disclosure of personal information about individuals, for organisations that the Act applies to. 

Backbone, as a small business, is not obliged to comply with the 13 Australian Privacy Principles contained in the Privacy Act 1988. However Backbone takes privacy seriously, and has adopted this Privacy Policy for the management of personal information. The use of the term “personal information” means any information from which an individual’s identity is apparent or can be reasonably ascertained.

Website Visits

You can generally visit the site without revealing personal information, unless you choose to provide such information. The information received depends upon what you do when visiting the site. 

As is the case for nearly all web sites, Backbone makes a record of your visit, logging the following information for statistical purposes: 

● your server’s address 

● the name of the top-level domain from which you access the Internet (for example: .gov, .com, .au, .nz,etc.) 

● the date and time of the visit to the site 

● the pages accessed and documents downloaded 

● the previous Internet address from which you linked directly to the site. (In the cases where the referring site declines to pass this information on, these details are not obtained by the statistics server.) 

We will not identify users or their browsing activities, except where a law enforcement agency (or other government agency) may exercise a legal authority to inspect the ISP logs (e.g. by warrant, subpoena or notice to produce). 

Cookies

A cookie is a piece of information that an Internet web site sends to your browser when you access information at that site.

Parts of the Backbone site may store cookies on your browser in order to better serve you when you next visit the site. Cookies are optional for the user and your browser can be set either not to accept cookies or to prompt you to accept them or not case by case. 

Information We Collect

Backbone collects information from members, participants in Backbone’s programs and events, and attendees at Backbone’s events and performances. The kinds of personal information that Backbone collects and holds are (as relevant): 

● Name 

● Emergency Contacts 

● Address 

● Phone number 

● Email address 

● Date of Birth 

● Gender 

● Credit card details 

● Amount donated 

How We Collect Information

Backbone collects information in a number of ways, and normally collects that information directly from the individual: 

● Via booking forms, membership forms and participation forms; 

● Through Backbone’s newsletter subscriber page; 

● Via the organisation’s marketing database; 

● Via donation forms; and 

● Over the telephone, via email, online and in person. 

We may also collect personal information from third party ticketing systems such as Humanitix, when we use them to manage the ticketing for Backbone events. 

How We Store Information

Personal information collected by Backbone is stored on the organisation’s secure server and in physically secure locations within the organisation. Access to personal information is restricted to the Backbone employees that are directly responsible for the organisation’s primary functions and activities as related to that information.

How We Use Your Information

Backbone uses personal information for operational and marketing purposes. For example, personal information is used to: 

● Contact an individual: 

○ if a workshop, event or performance changes, is cancelled or is postponed; 

○ if Backbone has difficulties processing the individual’s transaction or issuing their tickets to a performance or event; 

○ to respond to enquiries made by the individual; 

○ to obtain or clarify information provided by the individual about a workshop, event, performance or function to be held at the Backbone; 

○ to seek feedback regarding Backbone’s services and/or any program, event or performance attended by the individual at Backbone; 

● Make a reservation or booking; 

● Identify an individual when they are visiting Backbone; 

● Provide an individual with marketing material and information about Backbone products and services, and up and coming events that may interest them; 

● Administer ticketing services, including processing an individual’s transaction, issuing tickets and confirming booking details (this may involve posting tickets and receipts to the individual’s postal address or emailing etickets, booking confirmations and receipts to the individual’s email account); 

● Provide an individual with a refund or exchange in certain circumstances; 

● Process donations an individual has made to Backbone; 

● Research and develop Backbone’s services; and 

● Protect the health and safety of individuals while they are visiting Backbone. 

Marketing

Backbone uses personal information collected from individuals for the purposes of direct marketing. For example, personal information may be used to notify individuals of Backbone’s products and services, and upcoming events that they may be interested in. 

Marketing material may be provided to individuals over the telephone, via email or via post. 

If you no longer wish to receive marketing material from Backbone you may opt-out via the unsubscribe button on our marketing material. 

Disclosure of Information

Backbone does not normally disclose personal information that we collect (or that we receive from third parties) to external parties, however we might disclose that information to: 

● an entity that we are authorised or required by law to disclose the information to (for example, law enforcement agencies, or various Federal, State or Local Government bodies and public health agencies); 

● our professional advisers, contractors or other service providers that we engage to carry out or advise on our activities. 

We may also disclose your personal information with your consent. 

We do not normally disclose personal information to overseas recipients. We would disclose your personal information to an overseas recipient if you agreed to that disclosure, or if the disclosure of information is authorised or required by law. 

The Backbone ticketing system is operated through third party ticketing sites such as Humanitix. Ticket buyers will provide their information to third party ticketing systems such as Humanitix, which can be viewed by Backbone staff for the purposes of managing your ticketing. 

The Backbone venue hire system is operated through a third party online booking system, Meeting Hub. Meeting Hub collects information from venue hirers on behalf of Backbone. The Privacy Statement for venue hire (to be provided to venue hirers) is attached to this Policy. 

Access and Correction

Subject to some exceptions under Australian law, you have the right to access the personal information Backbone holds about you and to have your personal information corrected.
