“Feeling that beat in my dreams…”
to wrap up our HUB Resident features, we sat down with Kelsey Dell and collaborator Kerrod BOX to chat about their project, Doppelklang.
Hi! My name is Kelsey and I am a contemporary dance artist based in Meanjin/BNE with a heart full of questions and a body that’s always searching for answers. My movement and ideas live in a quirky, colourful world. I thrive in collaborative spaces, where ideas bend and bodies respond.
Hello! My name is Kerrod and I am also a contemporary dance artist based in Meanjin/BNE. I enjoy the storytelling that dance can evoke and am very interested in pushing limits, whether that be physically, mentally or metaphorically, I’m all for it!
Hi team! Can you introduce us to your project in just one sentence?
Welcome to Doppelklang, a choose-your-own-adventure rave duet, inviting audiences to wear their best outfit and get ready to dance the night away.
Sounds like an ideal night out. If I saw Doppelklang at this year’s Backbone Festival, what might be muttering under my breath as I walk out?
“I’ll be feeling that beat in my dreams tonight.” “I am dehydrated, and I was an audience member.” “Wait, was I in the show?” “Headphones made it feel super immersive.”
And to finish strong, what are you most excited for in your residency at Backbone?
We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be part of this year's Backbone Residency. This platform allows us to develop our concept, bring our creative vision to life, and collaborate with the inspiring community of artists around us. We’re particularly excited to explore the intersection of rave culture and contemporary dance, and to find new ways of sharing that energy and passion with audiences. Working outdoors presents unique challenges, but with the support and resources of Backbone, we’re eager to embrace these elements as part of the creative process. This residency also offers us the chance to grow as independent practitioners, expanding our choreographic skills, experimenting with new performance environments, and deepening our artistic voices. We’re energised by the spirit of collaboration, innovation, and experimentation that this residency fosters.
And with that, our HUB Resident introductions conclude, but don’t fret! There will be plenty more behind-the-scenes chats with our artists throughout the year. Follow backbone for more insights!
