“Lots of heart and lots of laughter.”
HUB RESIDENTS Galore but wait a second, there’s more! Let’s hang out with virag dombay to chat about their residency focus.
Hey Virag, can you give us a quick introduction to you as an artist?
Hi there, I’m Virag and I’m a theatremaker and youth arts practitioner based in Meanjin. I am the artistic director of Play on Stage, which is a youth drama studio, production company, and publishing house based in Brisbane that seeks to empower young people through the arts. I have been working in the independent arts sector as a director, playwright, actor (sometimes all three) since 2018 and have toured and performed original works at Metro Arts, Arcana, Ad Astra, Brisbane Powerhouse, PIP Theatre, Brisbane Libraries, and the Ron Hurley Theatre. As a theatre-maker, I strive to stage and produce works that explore human connection, reveal hidden truths, and look at the world around us through different perspectives.
Amazing! Can you tell us about the project you applied to the program with?
Our project doesn’t have a working title yet as we’ve only just entered the first stage of creative development. What we know is that this will be a one-act play, written and performed by a team of powerful women that will centre around female friendships, experiences, and life in our twenties. Lots of heart and lots of laughter.
Now I want you to imagine what an audience member might say after leaving your work later this year.
‘I feel seen.”
Simple but powerful. I love it! Now to finish up, what are you most grateful for/excited about your residency at Backbone?
As a part of my residency, I’ve been working with Quinn in a mentorship program on arts and business management. Whilst we’ve only had a few meetings so far, it’s been such a blessing to stay the least. In terms of our performance outcome, I’m excited to be working with such a beautiful team, in such a beautiful space, knowing that my artistry and creativity in supported in every way.
