“It’s Horse Girl Summer!”
Next up in the hot seat is Nate Crossinggum. the focus of our interrogation? HORSES, PLAYS, and HORSE PLAYS.
Nathaniel, we know you are an actor, a writer, and a Hub Resident for 2025. How else would you describe yourself? Our beautiful readers would love to know.
I’m sort of like if Louis Theroux was transgender and lived in a radical cozy sharehouse. Which is to say, I spend a lot of time thinking about ecology and politics and community, and sometimes I try to express that by doing art.
What a fantastic description! Those are some big topics, and you tackle them in your latest work, called Horse Play.
We would love to hear more about it, what is your mini synopsis?
When a radical activist is interrupted by a wanna-be party girl in the midst of their plot to shut down the Melbourne Cup, a stampede across time begins and the lines between terrorist and victim, good and bad, person and horse start to blur.
Sounds like it is going to be a riot (the fun kind and maybe the other kind)! Do you have any idea what audiences might say when leaving the theatre?
“Huh?”
“Was that guy a horse?”
“It’s Horse Girl Summer!”
“Fuck the Cup”
I cannot wait to see this work, and I think Horse Girl Summer has a real ring to it. Charli XCX might want to start a collaboration…
And finally, what aspect of this residency is most valuable to you as an artist?
It’s unfortunately rare to even get the opportunity to put on a show, so I’m intensely grateful that we’ll have time to develop the work, connect as artists and have a venue to stage it all at the end. I’m hoping whatever the outcome, my theatrical muscles will be really buff afterwards.
