“The fingerprints on your hearts…”

We recently connected with 2025 Hub Resident Anabella Gregory, the creator and director of NEW work, FUSE.

Anabella, thanks so much for your time. Can you tell our audience about your practice? What is your specialty?

I specialise in circus and physical theatre, but I love to dip my toes into as much art as I can. You will always find me doing something related to the arts at any point in time. I absolutely live and breathe it.

It sounds like there are a lot of different forms and disciplines that you experiment with in your work. What drives your curiosity to create?

I am interested in work that pushes the boundaries of contemporary performance and brings together a wide range of disciplines and arts industries to create memorable experiences for audiences. I want to disrupt the usual, to make people think and feel and simply become immersed in and surrounded by art. I am most interested in the journeys and the stories of others, so I aim to take audiences on a journey through my art, as it is a combination of human experiences, dreams, and thoughts interacting with physical storytelling.

FUSE is the work you will be presenting in the Backbone Festival this year. If you were to distill FUSE into just one sentence what would it be?

FUSE aims to read the fingerprints on your hearts and take you into a world of light and connection by collecting stories and putting them onstage.

Wow! I am so eager to see this work, and I’m curious about the audience’s journey throughout the experience. What do you imagine an audience member might say after leaving FUSE?

“From walking into the foyer to leaving the theatre, I was utterly immersed in the experience. I’ve come out totally changed. I now have a sudden desire to go and tell my loved ones how much they mean to me.”

What aspect of the Hub Residency is most exciting to you?

I am most excited about bringing FUSE to life! I always have ideas running amok in my brain, so to see one of them actually come to life is absolutely insane. If you were to tell me 5 years ago this would be happening, she would not at all believe you. I do this all for little Bella, to show her that my art is worth sharing, no matter how many people say otherwise, or how many other obstacles get in the way.

We are so excited to see FUSE get underway, keep an eye out as we meet more HUB residents!
