Backbone Youth Arts and Steven May Productions are teaming up to bring you the ultimate opportunity: TECH BOOT CAMP! This is your chance to gain hands-on experience in technical production, learn from the best, and be part of an exciting arts festival. What's in it for you?
Mentorship & Masterclasses: Dive deep into theatre production and design with exclusive mentorship and masterclasses from the experts at Steven May Productions. Unlock your potential with personalised guidance and industry knowledge.
Paid Training: Get paid to learn! You'll be employed part-time by Backbone, receiving 42 hours of training at $23.46 per hour (LPA award Production & Support Staff - trainee level).
Hands-On Experience: Connect with Backbone’s artist in residence and provide crucial technical assistance for their upcoming performances. This is your chance to shine behind the scenes!
Full-Time Festival Crew: Be part of the action! You'll work full-time (37.5 hours per week) as the technical crew for Backbone Festival, earning $965.60 per week (LPA award Production & Support Staff Level 2). The festival runs from Monday, October 7th to Saturday, October 26th, offering you an unparalleled experience in an arts festival environment. From professional theatres to outdoor spaces and cosy performance nooks, you'll get to work in diverse and exciting settings.

If you have experience working, volunteering or helping in production and are looking for some hands on experience this program is for you. While you may be required to work on your own during the festival using both lighting and sound equipment, you will always have support nearby and we’ll teach you the basics of all the equipment.

YES you will need to be 30 years of age or younger at the time of applying.
Our TECH BOOTCAMP is purposefully created to support our Young and emerging technicians and designers.

Within the TECH BOOTCAMP Program, you will receive approx. 42 hours of paid and dedicated training with Steven May.
This training will include hands-on masterclasses with professional standard equipment provided by Steven May Productions as well as dedicated time and training within the Ron Hurley Theatre.
After the training period, you will be brought on full-time to design and operate our 2024 Backbone Festival.

Open and ongoing communication.
Work in collaboration with the Backbone team to ensure all parties are supported.
Provide feedback to Backbone at the end of the TECH BOOTCAMP Program to help assist and develop our future programs.
During your TECH BOOTCAMP, you are expected to act as ambassadors of Backbone, promoting your experience
Professional work ethic. We are a small team at Backbone and trust each other to show up, deliver and ask question if needed.

Basics of lighting and sound setups, both in a found space theatre and traditional theatre context
Basics of lighting and sound design for events, as well as accommodating touring works
Festival time management, stage management and working under time constraints and problem solving
Collaboration with artists and integration of technical elements with creative decisions and design.

During the festival weeks, Monday - Wednesday will be used for tech/dress rehearsals for our artists. Performances will take place Thursday - Saturday and Sundays will be a day off for everyone.
You will be employed full-time, from Monday 7th October - Saturday 26th October. You will work a full-time week of 38 hours. A staff roster will be created in consultation with our technicians that could see you working shifts of up to 9 hours between 8:00am - 11:00pm Monday - Saturday.

Yes! As the first day of your full-time employment will be a public holiday, you’ll receive a paid day off.

These dates are locked in. We have limited time to deliver the program. We will work case by case to navigate peoples requests and if you are aware of any dates which maybe an issues please discuss them in the interview process. Open discussion helps us all work through these things with notice.

Age: Applicants must be 30 years of age or younger at the time of application.
Career Impact: The potential impact of the program on the applicant's professional development.
Interest in Theatre: Demonstrated interest in the backstage business of theatre.
Teamwork and Composure: Ability to work effectively in a team and maintain composure under pressure.
