HUB

RESIDENCY

designed for curious, untamed, and experimental young artists to explore and create.

Backbone’s HUB Residency provides artists 30 years old and under, OR artists making work for children and families, with space, time, and resources to develop their projects.

Whether you're an individual creative practitioner or part of a collective, this is an open invitation for artists across theatre, music, visual art, dance, circus, and any other artistic disciplines.

Backbone will supply each HUB Resident with up to 100 hours of free rehearsal space, development support from the Backbone team, and a presentation spot at Backbone Festival (October 2026).

Backbone creates space for young and emerging artists to grow their creative capacity, providing an opportunity to develop exceptional work that elevates their practice, and contributes to the growth of sharing diverse stories, voices, and perspectives.

Backbone’s HUB Residency is an artist-led opportunity that is development-focused, allowing artists the freedom to germinate ideas that are curious, untamed, and experimental.

APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2026 HUB RESIDENCY PROGRAM CLOSE ON THE 16TH FEBRUARY.

FAQ

  • Whether it's a brand new idea or something you've been working on that just needs some extra support. Backbone’s HUB Residencies are open to project proposals at any stage of development.

  • YES. Our HUB Residencies are open to individuals, small and large groups, and established companies. Applications will need to have one main contact, who can act as the main point of communication.

  • NO. While Backbone's focus is on artists 30 years and under our HUB Residencies are open to:

    • Individual artists 30 years and under.

    • Collectives where the lead creative (or the majority of the team) is 30 years and under.

    • Individuals and collectives of any age making work specifically for children and young people (under 18 years).

  • NO. Applicants who are successful in receiving a HUB residency are not required to have a public outcome at Backbone Festival. This notwithstanding, the Festival provides a valuable opportunity for emerging artists to share their work, expand their audience, and receive a share of ticket sales to their exhibition/performance.

This outcome can vary from a Work In Progress (WIP) showing, to an industry showing, to a full production.

  • Backbone is a multi-arts organisation, and our Hub Residencies are designed to support both visual art and performance-based work. It will be important to consider how our venue (Seven Hills Hub) can help bring your project to fruition, and ensure you highlight this in your application.

    • During your HUB Residency, artists are expected to act as ambassadors of Backbone, by promoting your HUB Residency and any public outcomes (i.e. performances, workshops, etc.).

    • Open and ongoing communication.

    • Work in collaboration with the Backbone team to ensure all parties are supported and project deadlines are maintained.

    • Provide feedback to Backbone at the end of the HUB Residency to help assist and develop our future programs.

  • The spaces available to HUB Residents are also available to hire by the general public. As such, we need to find a balance that keeps our venue available to as many people as possible. However, we are open to negotiating the hours of use under certain circumstances (i.e. if you're working with school-aged artists)

  • Applications will be assessed by Backbone staff using the following criteria:

    • The project is led by artist/s aged 30 and under OR the project is developing work for children and Young People (under 18).

    • Clear articulation of the project proposal.

    • Strength, originality and viability of the proposal.

    • Potential impact of the residency on the career or practice of the artist/s.

    • How your idea aligns with the Backbone ethos: curious, untamed, experimental.

  • YES. We encourage our residents to engage with audiences and get creative with their display cabinet activations. Whether it be a display space to sell artworks, a QR-code launch point that takes viewers further into your work, or a dynamic space that evolves throughout your residency, Backbone welcomes applicants eager to innovate!

  • To apply, you will need to clearly explain the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and WHY of your project. You will also need to include a CV/resume of the lead creative.

You can submit this via our Application Form which is available HERE OR by submitting a short 5-10 minute video that responds to all the questions in the Application Form to:

    info@backbone.org.au
