Backbone welcomes you into our beloved, badass Bowlo, now reformed into not only a community based venue for hire but a creative space and the hub for artists across the world. Our versatile home now entering its Fifth year, has provided us with an adaptable and generous base of operations and countless opportunities.
REGULAR EVENTS & MENTORSHIPS
CANDY SOCIAL CLUB
Beginning in 2019, Candy Social Club creates a safe space for LGBTQIA+ artists and audiences to share, experiment and celebrate. Featuring an explosion of drag, dance, poetry, fashion, visual art and live music, Candy proudly and loudly twists the lolly wrapper on what queer nights can be. Candy is a platform for young artists to take to the stage alongside community leaders, and is about taking risks, experimenting, creating connections and finding community.
You can catch Candy Social Club on Saturday 6th March for a special Mardi Gras celebration!
Candy Social Club is led by Sampson Smith, mentored by Katherine Quigley.
ROUSED AT!
Roused At! is a largely DIY-inclined, independently run Live Music Promotion ‘company’ (one person) operating in / around Pig City. We curate regular gigs showcasing BNE’s vibrant underground, from the esoteric noise nerds to the jangle pop darlings.
The prerogative is to stoke a culture of diverse performing artists, provide worthwhile platforms to them, and open audiences up to what truly separates our town from the others.
Roused At! Show Co is led by John Morris, mentored by Katherine Quigley.
ELEKTROLAB
Elektrolab is a female-led creative technology space who offer skill building in creative technology through a range of short and long term workshops and mentoring programs. Elektrolab has been hosting experimental sound and noise events at Backbone, online and in person, since 2020.
Elektrolab gigs are led by Tara Pattenden, who is mentoring Kim Day.
RUSTED SATELLITES
Rusted Satellites is a weekly program on Brisbane community radio station, 4ZZZ dedicated to instrumental, ambient and atmospheric music. In 2021 they will present a seasonal gig program at Backbone curated by Ceion.
Rusted Satellites is led by Ceion Hilton, mentored by Vanessa Tomlinson.
VENUE HIRE
Nestled in the parks along the riverfront in East Brisbane, Backbone offers a relaxed, flexible, free-form space where the opportunities are endless. Backbone has three spaces which can be hired separately, or you can hire the whole venue. Backbone has been a space for rehearsals, parties, shows, performances, festivals, fundraisers, art installations and more! We say YES to big ideas, so if you have an idea for our venue, get in touch.
ONLINE BOWLO
The Baddest Bowls Club is now ONLINE! In 2020, we got to dive in deep and begin creating an online community for connection, sharing and learning between young artists.
In 2021, our Online Bowlo is getting even better!
