Venue Hire & Bookings

Nestled in the parks along the riverfront in East Brisbane, Backbone offers a relaxed, flexible, free-form space where the opportunities are endless.

Internally, this venue can be separated into two distinct spaces - The Riverside Studio and The Roadside Studio - or both studios can be semi-opened to utilise the entire venue. Externally, there are large rolling greens perfect for outdoor markets, picnics or fetes.

At Backbone, we pride ourselves on helping you to try new things, to host weird and wonderful events, and to make sure your event has just what you need. Our venue is managed by young artists to help you make it all happen and achieve your vision. What’s more, every event we host helps raise funds for Backbone, so if you are here to raise money for another charity please let us know.

So—do you have an event idea? Need some rehearsal space? Send us a booking enquiry now!

Frequently Asked Questions

We are not a BYO venue. All drinks must be purchased through the Backbone Bar. But don’t worry, we have some amazing drink selections at fantastic prices. If there are specific drinks that you reckon would make your event sparkle, don’t hesitate to let us know and we can tailor the drinks selection to your event and tastes.

No, all drinks must be purchased through the Backbone Bar. The good news is that when you buy drinks through the Backbone Bar, you and your guests are supporting a not-for-profit organisation that is working with and for young people in the arts sector. So you’re supporting a great cause!

Backbone does not have a commercial/licensed kitchen or the capacity to provide catering equipment. Hirers are welcome to engage external caterers, and we’re happy to point you in the direction of excellent suppliers in the area.

Yes! The great thing about Backbone is that you can set up the space how you want. As such, it is important that you include setup time in your booking request.

Yes: amplified sound and/or patron noise must not exceed 99dB(C) before 10:00pm or 86dB(C) after 10:00pm.

Amplified sound on The Greens needs to finish at 9:00pm week-round.

No, there is not ample parking onsite for us to offer it as a part of your venue hire. However, there is plenty of parking available in the surrounding streets, and Backbone is very accessible via public transport.

Why is an arts space at a bowls club?

We live in a town that is brimming with artists but lacking in affordable spaces for them. We also have few arts and cultural spaces that are relaxed, comfortable, and encouraging of all members of the community to explore their own creativity. Bowls clubs are inherently intergenerational, welcoming and stripped of any pretence inherited from theatres and galleries. They cater to everyone and over the past years have become popular places for the whole family to enjoy.
When the opportunity to upcycle a bowls club was presented, we thought it would make the perfect home for us to do what we do.

More bowls club–related answers:

We are not particularly interested in buying bowls club uniforms (though we would gladly accept donated uniforms).
For barefoot bowls we highly recommend Norman Park Bowls Club, Camp Hill Bowls Club, New Farm Bowls Club and Merthyr Bowls Club. Unfortunately for us, the greens at the East Brisbane Bowls Club were not in very good condition when we took over, so the dream of barefoot bowls with us will be a little way off.

What's going on out front of the backbone venue?

The Lytton Road widening project is happening which sometimes means access to our building can change. If you need anything or have a question about how this might affect your visit to Backbone please get in touch.

What are some of the future plans for the venue?

We are excited to be working with Studio Apparatus and our venue sub-committee to improve our venue. The key goal at this stage is to ensure we have equitable access for people with disabilities and address the lack of bathroom facilities and pathways to the building for people in wheelchairs.
