Now more than ever, Brisbane’s artists and cultural leaders need a space to take risks, push their practice, and be bold. Artists need an organisation with the sole purpose of taking their practice to the next level. This is where Backbone comes in. Backbone is an important organisation in the tapestry of the cultural landscape in Brisbane, and Australia, and we’re reaching out to Build Up Backbone.

What Do We Need?

We need to raise $50k which will go towards two main streams of work:

Backbone Venue

At the end of 2016 we were lucky enough to get the keys to the old East Brisbane Bowls Club. Now in 2018 and beyond, we are planning some big changes for this little building. First up, we have plans to make the building more accessible. This includes updating the entry points to the building, and getting a whole new and accessible bathroom.

It’s not just about the building, it’s about the community that it fosters, and it’s about making sure this building truly responds to all those who use it.

We have received funding from The Community Benefit Gambling Fund, Brisbane City Council and Arts Queensland Arts Infrastructure Fund for the initial upgrades. Money donated during Build Up Backbone will allow us to take our accessibility upgrades further, sooner.

2019 International Exchange Program

Next year Backbone is taking the big step of taking our artists international. Yep, you read that right! We’re excited to take a diverse delegation of Backbone’s resident artists to LONDON. We’re very thankful to be working with Battersea Arts Centre to put Brisbane’s young voices on the international stage.

This will also allow us to foster our networks so that later in the year, we can welcome several delegations of young artists from London, South Korea, Japan, Mexico and Syria.

Money donated during Build Up Backbone will be put towards the many expenses of touring a troupe of 6 - 8 artists and producers who have been working closely with Backbone over the past 2 years. We’re excited to bring artists like The Sui Ensemble, Stephen Quinn, Yirrinda, and Spilt Milk Collective to give them the incredible professional development and networking opportunity that working with Battersea Arts Centre will bring.
